Although this is in somewhat fictionized form, the value of the book is so definitely factual, that we are putting it under non-fiction. It is a story of a boy's effort to get schooling in rural Mexico, at the beginning of the extension of Mexico's school system to rural communities. The struggle for land -- the struggle for learning -- the struggle for economic independence and a breakawayfrom the peonage system -- all this is the basis for the story of ""our Mexican neighbor"". A different angle on regional material -- should have definite school value for supplementary reading.
