NIKOLINE'S ACADEMY

A slow, slow sequel to Nikoline's Choice (1947) in which the young Danish girl from a greasewood prairie in the Utah of 1892, studies for the teaching profession in a Mormon academy. Determined to cram a lengthy teachers' course into one year, Nikoline works very hard at her studies, but has time for making friends, taking on student government responsibilities, even going to dances and boating with attractive, serious Ray Shumway. Unusual glimpses of Mormon institutions and religious practices, but the heroine's solid-stolid values, although admirable, cause Nikoline and her doings to appear a bit heavy-footed.
