These, and many other excuses, keep him from trying to get his freedom to marry Christa for over three years, but she is faithful, even when she meets Josh, her own age and loving her. She meets Paul's wife, realizes no quarter will be given from that end, weighs Paul against Josh, and changes her heart interest and becomes a Wac.
