KNOW ABOUT ABUSE

by Margaret O. Hyde

Pub Date: Oct. 1st, 1992
ISBN: 0-8027-8176-4
Publisher: Walker

An author who writes widely on related subjects (Know About Drugs, rev. ed. 1990) comes up with one neat little book: mature in content and outlook but short enough for reluctant readers—a combination of global outlook and specific, usable information. Covering more types of abuse than are usually found in such books (e.g., abandonment, verbal battering, even overprotection as abuse), Hyde helps readers understand that lack of knowledge about human development is often what's behind abusive parenting (e.g., believing that children learn from punishment). The author's empathy for parents and youngsters alike makes her a valid spokesperson; readers may well follow her guidelines for getting help. Resources; bibliography; glossary; index.
