Seventeen-year-old Nona Robertson's mother took over the management of a undown motel under an arrangement that would make her a partner if she could make sufficient payments throughout the first season. Nona and her brothers and sisters gave their help although not much enthusiasm. Set in the Makah reservation on the northwest coast of Washington, the story provides information about Indian customs and legends, the hard work and imagination necessary for success in a family enterprise, and just a dash of romance to appeal to the love interest of the teen-age girl. Despite its too obvious insertion at times, the descriptive material is interesting and the values represented outweigh the annoyance which the occasionally awkward dialogue may arouse the reader.
