CLASS PRESIDENT

Seattle, just after the war was a scene of conflict in which white, yellow and black were pitted against each other in their desperate desire for economic and social security. The junior high school which Chinese Margaret Dong attends reflects the adult animosities which riddle the town, and as class president, Margaret attempts to resolve the tension. By means of channelling the cultural currents of each group--the returning Nisei, the Chinese, educated Chinese-American, the Caucasian--she creates a community made richer rather than poorer by diversity. A well intended, mild story which sheds light on one of the most interesting and complex communities in the United States.
