The Rocking Horse is an antique shop in a small Vermont town, owned by a jewel-bedecked widow of a jeweler, who had once been a dancer in New York. When her iece, sixth grader Cassie Clifford, wins a local newspaper contest with a story about Aunt Emerald's unusual career, she sets off an exciting chain of events. The story is reprinted by a large city newspaper, and some time later the jewelry is stolen. Cassie is instrumental in recovering the jewelry and discovering the real thief. The story contains several entertainingly eccentric characters, relatively little mystery and a somewhat contrived plot.
