A sugar-coated account of San Diego -- its discovery by Cabrillo and subsequent dominion by Spaniards, Mexicans, and Americans. Historical episodes, legends, and colorful tales from the early festivals and rodeos, through the days of the Gold Rush, to the recent plans for setting a giant telescope on Palomar Mountain. The factual material is clearly presented; the illustrations are lively and pictorial; but, even for youngsters, this record of conquest is gilded too brightly with romance.
