Historical episodes, legends, and colorful tales from the early festivals and rodeos, through the days of the Gold Rush, to the recent plans for setting a giant telescope on Palomar Mountain. The factual material is clearly presented; the illustrations are lively and pictorial; but, even for youngsters, this record of conquest is gilded too brightly with romance.
