THE PENGUIN BOOK

Mr. Popper would be pleased to meet Captain Cook's cousins in this precise catalogue: not only the Adelie but also the Emperor, King, Ringneck, Gentoo, Macaroni, Rockhopper, Magellanic and Blackfool. Following a resume of general qualities, each has an individual characterization, including mating and nesting habits, movement on land and sea (and modifications since the arrival of man), and references to evolutionary history (e.g. adaptation of the wing to swimming). The one-a-chapter treatment emphasizes differences among penguins, making this a good companion to Darling's Penguins which emphasizes shared characteristics and limits information on variations. The drawings also detail distinctions.
