KIRKUS REVIEW

A successor to Words and In A Word, this again pursues assiduously and affectionately the origins and changing histories of certain words and expressions. Their derivation and development, their general meaning and special applications (legal, medical, etc.) some conjecture and occasionally a personal aside, and their usage- either classical or contemporary (Thurber, Disney and Groucho Marx brush shoulders with Chaucer, Caesar and Thackeray)-this makes up a ""random dictionary"". Each word, and there's a word to a page, is illustrated in line by W.A. Dwiggins. The substantial, continued sales of the earlier books predicates the market and an audience at all age levels.
