In New York, Yala escapes from her basket, boards a ship, sails to Brazil, returns to be cast ashore in a storm off North Carolina. There in the woods she has three kittens and is finally given a happy home by the Elliot family. The pat unimaginativeness has a certain literal, steadying appeal.
