This is the story of a Scottish Deerhound, the prize of a kind but aloof master, and of his love for Jack, a young boy, which remains unshaken through a series of tortuous ordeals. Gavin's escape from a New York State dude ranch leads him across the country to Wyoming. Despite the life he has lived with his friend, a female wolf, despite his ability to survive in the wilderness and his devotion to his task as watch dog on a Wyoming sheep ranch, he is haunted by a dim memory of Jack, with whom he is finally reunited. Mrs. Johnson writes often and competently about animals. Her story of an unusual dog flows easily from her understanding of the animal temperament and makes her use of coincidence and device perfectly acceptable.
