A curious first novel of a Central American plantation camp, with much that is violent, much that is morbid in its action and mood. Primitive, elemental, intense, this story of an airman's wife, Kate, loved by two men, and breaking with her husband to go to one of them for the few months remaining to him of life. It is the story, too, of 17-year old Rosita, returning from a European schooling to the mare pattern of the plantation. A strange tale, absorbing, repellant at times (there's a pornographic passage that bars it for most public libraries) -- and yet showing evidence of ability to command attention of its readers.
