FILET CROCHET LACE

If there is--today--a need for a book on filet crochet lace, this is the book. To one outside the field, it seems oddly timed, but perhaps it is a basic book for the long haul. Certainly it is well done. The author does a weekly column in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, so should know her market. Against a brief background and history of cotton, she sketches processes of manufacture, implements, types of crochet work, sundry stitches with nomenclature. Then, in 15 lessons, she develops from the simplest foundation stitches to more intricate ones. And then goes on to a selection of designs for ecclesiastical as well as home use, designs such as the grapes, the lilies, the stars, etc. A final section tells of organizations to stimulate better needlework, of the needlecraft guild, the needlecraft bureau, and various contests.
