KIRKUS REVIEW

In Woods and Fields is the forerunner to which this measures up wonderfully. The main categories are birds; shrubs and trees; vegetables; insects; snakes, turtles, onds; and small mammals. Classified according to kind, habitat, season, the material a arranged in smooth cycles, the individual descriptions themselves being models of integration between illustrations and interestingly stated facts. Index and bibliography polish to this gem of a young encyclopedia, and of course Margaret Waring Buck's drawings are as charmingly detailed as before. Where a garden is not available, more walks will be taken -- where a garden isn't loved, it soon will be.
