From the simplest form of plant to the most highly complex aquatic animal, the author presents a dictionary-like list of marine life. At the beginning of each division (e.g. sponges, fish, water birds), general information is given, followed by a catalog of definitions two or three sentences long. In many instances the definitions are too brief to be of value; some serve only to locate and vaguely describe the specimens. The countless black and white pencil drawings seem accurate and usable for identification purposes. The book should prove to be of some use as a quick reference. For a better realization of this whole subject, Rachel Carson's The Sea Around Us is far superior.
