THE GREAT PINE'S SON

In familiar territory again (see the author's Lady of the Mohawk, for adults, and Prince In Buckskin, an adventure book about Joseph Brant) Margaret Widdemer writes with feeling about an incident behind Pontiac's campaign. As principals it involves young Will Johnson, Joseph Brant's cousin, whose father was the Indian Commissioner who made peace with Pontiac at Oswego in 1766 - and Archange, a French girl friendly to the British. To escape school, Joe sets out for the west but meets a Seneca chief on his way to join forces with Pontiac. Trapped temporarily, Will holds back his true feelings, but is able throughout the campaign to use the position and, with the help of Archange, reveal Pontiac's movements to the British. Good fiction that highlights both sides of the picture.
