A constructive and at the same time moving approach to a double teen age problem -- a father's second marriage, and ""going steady"". It is hard for 16-year old Judy Harrison to adjust to her widowed father's announcement that he plans to marry Carrol Johnson, for there is the threat to her close relationship with her father. What makes it harder still is that Carrol's son, Stephen, is the first boy Judy has ever cared for. There's the temptation to accept the pattern of her high school friends and enter a binding relationship with Stephen. But, in facing her personal challenge of readjustment, Judy recognizes that at sixteen she is just on the verge of adult life, and not ready for permanent commitments. There's something substantial here for the teen age readers.
