FOUR GARDENS

A story for your Gay Family market -- not quite the audience that lined up as enthusiastic rooters for The Flowering Thorn. This is more of the realistic school -- the story of an Englishwoman, born in lower middle class, and very self-consciously so, and rising out of her class through the money-making abilities of her stolid husband, who made shoes during the war, and through the intellectual cults of her very modern son and daughter. She's a very real person, with her four gardens, one marking each epoch of her life -- and you'll like her as a human being. A good humored, friendly sort of book -- your conservatives will enjoy it; your younger customers will not find it stodgy.
