The story, taken from Grimm, is about the poor fisherman who caught a fish but then saved its life when he learned it was an enchanted prince. His wife scolded him for not asking a favor and made him return to ask the fish for a cottage to replace their hut. The wish was granted but the wife kept forcing her husband to ask for greater favors until eventually she begged to be like God and found herself back in the hut. The always popular tale is enhanced by Mrs. Zemach's illustrations in her well-known style. They alternate between black and white and the blue, gray, gold combination that was used so well in Salt, showing the chunky peasants in their course from rags to riches to rags.
