Almost a generation before the Civil War, the Field family have begun to split on the Abolition issue in Cincinnati, a battleground for the rights of man. Against the background, the issue here lies between twins raised one in the north and one in the south. And despite a certain amateurishness in coming to grips with characters and situations, the study of romance and politics has some telling qualities of early America.
