The story of this little Quaker maid of old Philadelphia is slow in getting under way, it seems less formulated plot than Skippack School and Henner's Lydia and more emphasis on the psychological aspects. Hannah is not cut to the cloth of her Quaker family; she is constantly battling with ""Old Spotty"", the tempter who whispers in her ear. She craves the frills of her small neighbor. Finally, after repeated sad experiences, she learns that her bonnet is a symbol of what her people represent, and learns it unforgettably, in helping a slave woman escape. Marguerite de Angeli is making a real contribution to American background and tradition.
