FOLK ARTS AND CRAFTS

With the current enthusiasm for do-it-yourself projects, this categorical compilation of ""authentic folk crafts to meet present day demands"" may well find its audience among laymen as well as educators. Embracing the variety of crafts which it does -- leather tooling, ceramics, wood carving, weaving, embroidery, furniture decoration and puppetry, guidance is confined to the most elementary directions and information on each topic. However, as a catalyst toward stimulating interest in a greater number of crafts there is much of value. Profusely illustrated, the drawings and diagrams are heavy and inartistic, but nevertheless they communicate sequential steps in making everything from piggy banks to hiking sticks. The graphic arts do not come under discussion. Educators, camp personnel and therapists should welcome the numerous suggestions offered.
