THE BELOVED FRIEND

An author with several good books to her credit here sketches in pastels the blue-stocking social world of the South in 1748. The full length portrait of ally Cary, ""flanked"" by her husband George William Fairfax and her ""dearly beloved friend"", George Washington, is more a study of the formal manners of the time than of personalities. The uninvolved story flows along gently as a vivid picture is recreated, and all in all, it provides leisurely, pleasant reading-- for girls.
