The full length portrait of ally Cary, ""flanked"" by her husband George William Fairfax and her ""dearly beloved friend"", George Washington, is more a study of the formal manners of the time than of personalities. The uninvolved story flows along gently as a vivid picture is recreated, and all in all, it provides leisurely, pleasant reading-- for girls.
