THE RAINBOW BOOK OF AMERICAN FOLK TALES AND LEGENDS

Here is a cornucopia of carefully called material with richly varied arrangements of factual elements, i.e., state flowers, birds and nicknames, and a rewarding group of stories about legendary, regional and national myths; Peace Bill, Paul Bunyan and Casey Jones and others lesser-known. The illustrations, some in color, by Marc Simont are exuberant. There are bad-man legends, tall tales and a few excellent Indian legends. Occasionally the telling could have more luster -- but on the whole this is a superior and delightful way to instill a feeling of respect and affection for the invincible American spirit. The text and the whole book are large scale, in keeping with the topics. It has a high wide and handsome air about it which children should find exciting.
