YOUNG MARY STUART by Marian King

YOUNG MARY STUART

The author of Coat of Many Colors (1950), a strong dramatization of the story of Joseph, gives a similar treatment to the life of Scotland's queen in the years before she ascended the throne. The view of Mary's young years in France has been seldom scanned, and here there is a thoughtful scrutiny of the kind of life she and the rest of the French court led. Colorful in its descriptions of the dress and festivity, it examines as well the elements in the network of personalities and politics- Mary's early marriage to the Dauphin and her protective feeling for him, her friendship with the Cardinal de Lorraine, the gay processions from chateau to chateau as they contrasted with the international intrigue that foresaw her doom. Searching and well imagined.
