What would you do if"".......all the familiar things in the garden suddenly beckoned; if the garden gate creaked a welcome, if the flowers called out happily, if the field mice and chipmunks romped playfully, etc., etc. Images like these are illustrated in black ink until the last few pages when the child is finally encouraged to answer. Hurrying back through the garden to her room, she decides to take her doll with her next time. A tedious build-up to a nonsensical anti-climax will probably not confuse the young reader, who having abandoned the book in boredom, will be spared the ordeal. A self-conscious attempt at imagery with little substance.
