The building of the Santa Fe, and the deadly rivalry between it and the Denver and Rio Grande, is the background of this adventure story in which Trudie and her father's Mennonite ward, Katie Kaffer, get their sixteen year old lives entangled with the development of the railways. Daughter of a chief engineer on the Santa Fe, Trudie, the reckless tomboy, gets into all sorts of ticklish situations, but eventually is the winner of a victory for the Santa Fe. There is plenty of melodrama, but one does get the drama of the railroads, though not as significant a picture as there should be of the part that railroad expansion played in the development of the country.
