A recoup, for Marian Sims, after a slight second novel, this progressive, congenial and live story of a typical southern town, and two modern-minded young people. The town is a backwash of professional Christians and reactionaries who have never bothered to face the political graft, crime-festering slums, and bigoted injustice which are rampant. Tom, city solicitor, breaks away from his self-righteous father to crusade, loses his fight to abolish bootlegging but scores and cleans up the police department. And there is Jean, his secretary, whose candor and generosity and refusal to bargain with herself finally wins him. An alert, liberal tone for a story which takes up common problems and common ills. Rentals -- and some sales.
