Air pollution is getting so bad that the witches, whose noses are too long for gas masks, will soon be unable to fly. So that he can learn about pollution and maybe help to stop it, Witchard the witchling enrolls in fourth grade at the earthlings' school. Despite his middy dress, which even boy witchlings must wear, Witchard is accepted for his speedy ""swooshing"" on the football field. Soon he's executive chairman of the school's litter fighters, with support from the children, principal, newspapers and police. Drop-outs even drop back in, ""because this war is relevant."" Gramwitch and Aunt Scarey help by flummoxing the machinery of all the big polluters and delivering biodegradable soap to every household, and in a final effort led by Witchard, the witches ""swoosh"" away the air inversion that has threatened to keep trick-or-treaters indoors. Even children will find it hard to go along with all this broom-propelled ecology action, but those who took m The Resident Witch (1970) will welcome Witchard too.
