Set in Frankland in the reign of Charlemagne, this makes unusual historical reading. Rauf, a boy who has always yearned to be a traveling merchant -- dusty foot -- instead of settling down to his father's trade of charcoal burner, realizes his dream through a series of stirring events, beginning with an attack by warring Saxons and the capture of his entire family. Vivid descriptions of the life of the times, of the fairs and bazaars, of the merchant caravans, of the caravan's stay among the Moors and Arabs in Spain, and finally the long trip home across the Pyrenees, to the court of Charlemagne, make the rich pageantry come alive. Worthwhile exploration of fresh material.
