A HOUSE IN VIENNA

A single day in the lives of the Hodls who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, and the intermingled lives of the tenants in their old home in Vienna. With the anniversary as a framework, the patterns of many lives converge, and one meets love that surmounts obstacles, new life for tired humans, loyalty to a cause, genius that refuses to permit itself recognition and so on. Warm and appealing -- with many human touches -- a novel in kaleidoscopic glimpses. Somewhat the appeal of The Old Man's Birthday -- though with less plot and with the slight liability of foreign names and setting.
