A RECRUIT FOR ABE LINCOLN

A corking good story about a boy called Jefferson Wade from Pennsylvania who couldn't join the Union forces because of a paralyzed arm. He gets his chance however in 14 through Sergeant Bill Green, to become a telegrapher in the army telegraph office in Washington. His brother Bony is a guard for the President and Jeff also is near the great man when he haunts the office for news. Through a beautiful young nurse, Lynn Van Marl, Jeff senses Booth's plot to assassinate Lincoln, he tries to avert it but is just too late. During the story the boy is sent off with a Copperhead named Reilly to get the news about Grant and the Battle of the Wilderness; this gives a most vivid picture of the life and horror of the battlefield. All the way through you feel the humanity and humor of the rail-splitter. Excellent!
