Of regional interest, this collection of sketches of a school teacher in the Kentucky mountain backwoods. Unlike Jean Thomas, ""the traipsin woman"", the author has kept herself out of the picture and let the people speak for themselves in their oddly expressive vernacular. The Tolliver family, Sary and Nelt, carry the book as they do the community. It is Nelt who decides to raise a school house; it is he who community antagonisms towards ""brought-on learnin'""; it is he who thinks up a ""growed folks' school"". A wedding, church meetings, singing, funerals; bad luck of a green Christmas, fever comes to the hills. Character, customs and friendly charm.
