Somehow this struck me as a book that might be read aloud from four or five on, rather than a book for the six to nines to read to themselves. The story is of a very natural little girl who is beginning to be interested in her clothes, is worried -- too late -- when she dirties and scratches her new shoes, and relieved that mother can fix them, and who wants to keep the new gay umbrella dry. The colored pictures and the black and whites by Rosalie Slocum are the best she has done.
