A guide to understanding and applying spiritual principles in the workplace.

Gervais, a leadership coach and management trainer based in Canada, writes that the most common reason clients seek her help is to better manage toxic workplace environments. In the introduction, she states, “We cannot understand the nature of work without understanding that human beings are essentially, and before all else, spiritual.” Drawing on the teachings of the world’s great faiths, including Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Indigenous spiritualities, and Baha’i, she argues that management practices anchored in a holistic view of the human spirit can bring about happy, productive, and diverse workplaces instead of the typical hierarchical, competitive model that has existed since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Topics discussed include understanding the soul’s relationship to work; using the language of virtue, purpose, and belonging; and prioritizing safety, well-being, and community at work. Each chapter provides an overview of key concepts, offers one or two stories from the author’s experiences that illustrate the ideas and themes, and concludes with a summary of the chapter and a series of questions for reflection. Numerous references to contemporary authorities and recent research on business and psychology back up the author’s claims and are documented in endnotes. Though the writing is sometimes abstract, Gervais offers plenty of thought-provoking ideas and inspirational examples along with practical techniques and advice. For example, she notes that “service to others is a door to understanding that we can all open” and includes a story about one of her clients who was a talented employee stressed out by a toxic work culture who was able to improve his work life by setting boundaries in line with his personal moral compass. Those who dismiss Gervais’ approach as utopian will miss valuable opportunities to improve working conditions. Another round of editing would add some needed polish.

Unusual, thought-provoking ideas and advice for business leaders.
