Arriving in Alabama in search of a defense job, the five Sloans are up agains no work for Mr. Sloan for weeks to come, and an acute housing shortage. Discovering an abandoned and forgotten merry-go-round about which a veritable jungle has grown, they, and a boy whom they have befriended, make of it a satisfactory and very jolly home. This is a timely and most interesting story with the shadow of the war and financial worries counteracted by the colorful background of the charming old merry-go-round, the lush beauty of the Alabama forest, and the imagination and enterprise of the Sloan family. Their patriotism and resourcefulness are so evident throughout the story that the obvious moralizing at the and is disappointing. However, this will not spoil the story's appeal to both boys and girls. The format is attractive but I doubt if it will draw many children over 12.
