Ten year old Jan, a fatherless Czechoslovakian boy, dreams of the day when he shall go to America. His father was forcefully conscripted by the Austrian soldiers, and Jan is left to care for his distraught mother. His father's death finally established, Jan's mother is free to go to America where she will remarry, but Jan, now aware that his father has died heroically, and imbued with the spirit of the Czech republic, chooses to remain in his native country to perpetuate the ideals on which that country is established. Much detail on life in Czechoslovakia serves as a rich background for this story of youthful patriotism by the author of Look Beyond Tomorrow.
