The original Story of Language appeared in 1949. The present, revised edition includes new facts and figures and two new chapters. The first, entitled ""Self-Designation,"" discusses native names by which countries and peoples know themselves as against the names others give them. The second, ""Language and Psychology,"" takes up the connection of words with the mental processes of both the individual and the group. Other subjects dealt with: the origins and family relationship of languages, dialects, place names, personal names, slang, the structure of language. The author is Professor of Romance Languages at Columbia University.
