KIRKUS REVIEW

Suku, a timid seven-year-old African boy who has never ventured outside his village, overcomes his fear of lions when he rescues a curious elephant named Toto from a poacher's trap and leads him through the wilderness to his herd. A standard presentation of developmental themes, the story is distinguished only by the locale, which is emphasized but not particularly vitalized by Negri's characteristically hefty woodcuts
