GETTING ALONG IN ITALIAN by Mario Pei

GETTING ALONG IN ITALIAN

By

Publisher: Harper

This is the first in a series of language books originating from articles in Holiday Magazine by Professor Pei, a well-known linguist. In revised form each article constitutes the beginning chapter in each book. Getting Along in Italian is exactly what the title suggests- getting along- and is a more than adequate introduction to Italian for the prospective visitor. ""Have you your passport?"" and ""I want an aspirin,"" and ""Is there a good hotel?"" -- common needs and fancies characteristic of travelers are covered in toto. The emphasis is upon verbal communication in a foreign land even at the expense of the properties of grammar. However, in spite of the approach, a careful perusal of the grammar summary and the vocabularies would permit a serious beginner to respond to the inevitable ""Say something"" without bungling too drastically.
