BURIED TREASURE by Marion B. Cothren

The author of Pigeon Heroes gives a well-written, if sometimes sketchy, story of coal, -- how it became coal over an estimated 85 million years, how it is mined, its uses, its future. She takes her readers down a West Virginia mine, describes the various jobs which are necessary to get the coal from the ground, and the hazards involved; and gives a picture of the steady improvement in working conditions. She also pictures a coal minor and his family, and the typical life of a coal mining town. Then follows the story of dyes, and a glimpse into the future with the house of tomorrow, and its equipment made of nylon, plastic and synthetic rubber, all from coal.
