Primness and propriety were not for Callie Dean regardless of how fervently and family sworn tomboy and enemy of Andy Jenkins, finds young lady life in the post gold-rush hamlet of Hardpan, California, simply too dull. When the is held up on Bootjack Hill, Callie cannot, remain aloof, expeci when her Indian friend Winky Loosefoot is accused of the robbery. Reluctantly she joins forces with Andy and the two uncover a plot constructed by the very men who are thirsting for Winky's blood. With the Indian out of the way, greedy Jim Turnbeck would claim his land and divide it with sly Mr. Hoag, the miserly storekeeper. The spritely not only proves her courage to the town but also her usefulness to ole' Andy. Aside from its merit as an adventure tale, Callie's story is set against a rich background of early western American with its one-room schoolhouses, wagon-borne candle-makers, honey and very special young pioneers like Callie.
