THE CHEROKEE NATION by Marion L. Starkey

THE CHEROKEE NATION

By

Publisher: Knopf

Historical research, which records the story of the Cherokee Indians, of whom 3000 remain today of a once great Empire. It is a sad story, in sympathetic portrayal, of a quiet, dignified race which stood an unequal chance, as their territory was requisitioned down to the ""last little"", their faith in the white man disillusioned as Georgia demanded complete removal. They made a stand before the Supreme Court, but their case was foredoomed in legalities. Years of hoping and pleading and negotiating followed. Finally came the exodus west. Interwoven with their political history is their social development, their assimilation in the white culture of mission schools. A book of documentary value rather than general reader interest.
