PENNY AND PETER OF THE ISLAND

Here's a story of Dominica, where Penny's father is connected with the famous botanical gardens, and Peter's father is the white chief of police. With few white children on the island, these two are thrown together, but it takes some time -- and numerous tests -- to prove to Peter that a girl can be a good sport. There's a slight mystery element, as Penny receives mysterious messages, each one taking her on new adventure in order to find the missing shells of a necklace. The lush quality of the tropical background is well portrayed by the illustrations by Agnes Tait.
