KIRKUS REVIEW

Period story of the bleakness of life in a mining camp, when the coming of the peddler with his assorted supplies was a high point of a year. Particularly this is the story of Mary Ellen and her secret dream to have a dress made of store bought goods- and of how her dream gave way before the miracle of opportunity when the peddler brought the first sewing machine seen in the district.
