THE NINTH TENTACLE

The third of this author's stories set in a small French village -- a little more raisonnable than the earlier ones even if that can't be said of Fiona, the childless child-wife of autocratic Viktor Rolland who despairs of her ever running the household properly while she plays with dolls. When he is suddenly shot in the head, she marries again -- Rene who is ambitious and extravagant and canny -- but not canny enough to realize what Fiona is doing. . . to him. Camomile tea spiked with just a little more than sugar, for the ladies.
