Innocently satirising Chestnut Hill and Main Line snobbism the story here a boarding house on Spruce Street as the essence of integrity and family warmth. For Miss Pheny runs the house for her hicco Bella, who in turn lets her daughter, Araby, do what she wants when it comes to choosing friends, career, falling love, etc. Bella is pursued by international lawyer, schooled in the proper things, Horace Leads, its needy to marry him for Araby's sake, when Araby and Miss Pheny take matters into their own hands and force her to elope with man she really loves. There is Araby's own love for anthropology student, John Hendricks, and its successful termination its brought about by Miss Pheny at a horse race. And on the perimeter of their lives ance the Quaker and old Philadelphia families determinedly holding the barriers against the near-invasion of Spruce Strebb. Wildly malicious and a quietly entertaining family story.
