A Question of Courage seems almost perversely determined to turn itself into just another girl's story--a soppy romance with upperclass Peter (if only he weren't about to go off to the War), and friend Vera's sad wasting away. But none of this can really spoil Emily's remarkable transformation from a poor Birmingham seamstress who's a virtual slave at home to a club swinging Suffragette, bodyguard to the famous Miss Emmeline Pankhurst. Emily is outraged by her life of drudgery but she's really drawn into the movement through her adoration for frivolous, clothes-conscious Miss Marshall. Yet it's tough strapping Emily who, after a vividly described force feeding in jail and a few street brawls, finds herself repelled by the violence while Miss Marshall turns into a hardened campaigner. Essentially conventional, but Emily's physical courage and bluff good nature will win some recruits.
